tool 8 Looking at the tools...


During the summer while at the in- law's beach house for a week I pulled my ipad out and used the expert resource available to me (my niece who just graduated Langley HS in N. Virginia no less) to help me get familiarized with it. I must say she was very impressed that my district had put an ipad in my hands for the summer. And I was very impressed with this latest computing device. We downloaded apps. Shot lots of photos and videos, surfed the web, checked emails etc. I love it and I never thought I would be an Apple guy. lol

Of course I've only touched on the possibilities of the device because it seems every time I turn it on I learn more of it's capabilities. I will definitely spend more time learning how to best use this in my classroom. Syncing it with my laptop didn't work the first time so I'll have to go back and watch the tutorial again. I look forward to adding webclips/apps to the ipad for my first weeks intro.

As far as managing this and the other devices in the classroom setting I plan on having study teams in class and have on member of each team as the tech pro. This will be a volunteer position but from experience I know many students will want to be the one to be in charge of classroom technology. As with other tech devices I anticipate learning much from the students as we incorporate these latests gadgets into the day to day learning going on in class.

tool 11 reflection




I am very much excited about my skype collaboration project. It will be great to have a working economist in my classroom (digitally) helping my students understand what can be an intimidating subject.

The major change in my classroom procedure will be to get used to doing things a new way. I'm counting on the students to help me through this.

What was unexpected from me as I started the 11 tools was how much I enjoyed learning. I usually don't have time during the school year to work deeply on technology as I've had these last couple of days completing these exercises.

tool 10 digital literacy


Sometimes I feel as if the children are more digitally literate than me! lol But, in examining the things I've taught my own children about the internet, I feel that maintaining balance in their lives is very important. A healthy mix of the virtual world and the true is necessary to understand the potentials and pitfalls of both. Safety is each individuals responsibility. Just as there are neighborhoods I would not frequent out of fear there are places on the web like that also. I know they're there, filtering is topical and doesn't really protect you, only your own decisions  will do that.

Plagiarism is wrong, shoplifting is wrong, lying is wrong. Yeah, you might not get caught but that's not what the conversation is about. But... if you do get caught it will take a long time to change others perception of you. And that can be a very high price to payl

tool 9 the tools


A major eyeopener for me with the intro of the ipad is the speed at which computing advancing. After playing with the ipad for a hour or two I was amazed at the ease of making hi quality video! I've just begun using the editing features but they seem easy to learn and very intuitive. I learned that the memory component of the ipad is much more than I anticipated from such a small unit. The keypad is taking some getting used to.

I plan to manage the use of these classroom devices by rotating a procedure among collaborative groups. This may take some experimentation.

objective: to allow students to expand their awareness of economics outside of the academic world through question and discussion with a Phd. Economist.

description: in collaboration with another eco class questions will be prearranged according to students desires and inquiries. Instructor will guide the inquiry through preliminary lessons.

tool 6 connecting the classroom


I have wanted to use skype since I first learned of it last year. I have a neighbor who is a Phd economist working for a think tank out of the federal reserve bank who has agreed to skype into my classroom. The plan is for him to answer students inquiries into the economy, economists and the real world in general. I have set up my account, contacted my expert and I'm ready to go!www.skype.com

Like many technologies advanced there are too many features to make immediate use of without some practice time. I appreciate that time now as I see, not only ones I'm already using, but also a few I'll immediately try to explore such as the calendar, the docs feature, groups (as I'll have a second prep this year and will need collaboration assistance). I look forward to trying the media links in the "news" search feature.

3.  Having studied  some copyright  issues I had basic understanding of these laws although it was still beneficial.The fair-use provision basically give me the right to use copyrighted  material if I'm not doing so for gain.

HotLinking Tool 3



I've found using streaming video in the classroom to be very engaging. Discovery was always a favorite source but now that I'm teaching senior Economics I use much more main stream media including NPR audio, YouTube, and hopefully in the future student produced audio and video. In addition to Greg Mawkiw's blog I also visited The Economist's and the Wall Street Journal's. I'm not a subscriber yet so I was not able to comment. I did respond to Leon Hale's blog on Chron.com. I use his first person anecdotes in class and I enjoy being part of his blog community. I enjoy the anonymity this blog affords yet I'm interested in others comments. I also frequent D. Shannon's blog also on Chron.com. He reports on outdoor issues such as hunting and fishing. The URL is www.chron.com/blogs.

Into the google search bar I typed economics blogs and found Greg Mankiw's. It is titled Greg Mankiw's blog. He is the dept. chair and professor of Economics at Harvard. I spent a lot of time on this site but could not find a way to comment. He is on vacation so that may have something to do with it. Very interesting. I did comment on an entertainment/media site.
